IMPHAL: On Wednesday, vandals broke into the Bishnupur district home of Manipur PWD Minister Konthoujam Govindas, sparking new turmoil in the state. According to a report, when a mob assaulted the home in the Ningthoukhong neighborhood, Govindas and his family was not there at the time of the incident. A portion of a gate, windows, some furniture, and electronic devices were all broken. The ongoing ethnic unrest between the Meitei and Kuki communities in the state, which began three weeks ago and has already cost more than 70 lives, marks the first time a minister's home has been attacked.
Konthoujam is the sitting BJP MLA from Bishnupur.
A 29-year-old man was killed in the meantime by people from a separate community. In an another incident on Wednesday in the Bishnupur area, two more people were hurt. District officials in Bishnupur, Imphal East, and Imphal West have revoked the curfew relaxation as a result of these incidents. The curfew had previously been loosened to 5 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Meanwhile, prices of vital commodities have surged in Manipur since ethnic conflict began three weeks ago, since imports from outside the state have been hampered, with certain things selling for twice the typical price.
Rice, potato, onion, and egg, as well as LPG cylinders and petrol, are selling at much higher prices in most sections of the landlocked northeastern state.
Since May 3, ethnic violence has wracked the state, affecting 11 of Manipur's 16 districts. While intermittent acts of violence were being recorded practically every day, an indefinite curfew was enforced and internet access was shut down.
N Biren Singh, the chief minister of Manipur and the minister of home affairs, said his administration has requested more units of the central forces to control the recurrent unrest in several districts.
